I Finally Understand Folding Phones

Wake me up when September comes.

For a long time, I thought folding phones were just a fad. They reminded me of modular phones from a few years earlier. A brief moment of hype, nothing lasting. The early reviews of the first Samsung Galaxy Fold seemed to confirm that. But the category evolved quickly. In a short time, we went from fragile experiments to devices that are genuinely impressive. Still, I never felt like I needed one. It didn’t seem right for me. That changed this past week. As I’ve taken on more projects and spent more time working across apps, I finally understood why people swear by folding phones. Now I’m just waiting for one more company to join the mix.

Yes, that Company

This won’t surprise anyone familiar with me or this blog. I’m an Apple fan and a dedicated iPhone user. If you told freshman Nick that, he’d laugh in your face, but here we are. The rumored iPhone Fold has my mind going in a dozen directions. I can’t stop thinking about it and how I would use it.

I mostly use my personal phone after work. During the day, I’m on my work phone. But once the day wraps, I’m constantly tinkering on my own device. I’m also away from my desk more often, and that’s when my best ideas tend to hit. I usually offload those ideas to Claude or Codex through their web apps, but it’s not a great experience on a standard slab phone.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been pushing more frequent updates while on the go. I want that pace to continue. Carrying a 13-inch laptop everywhere isn’t realistic, and I don’t love having a backpack with me all the time. It also pulls me away from my family more than I’d like.

All of that is to say, a folding iPhone would make running One Thirteen on the go much easier. Sites like GitHub, Vercel, and Cloudflare would benefit from the larger display. If the rumors are even close to accurate, this could feel like an iPad mini when unfolded. That’s exactly what I need.

The Form Factor

Phone size and form factor have been debated for years, and folding phones add a new layer to that conversation. Right now, most options fall into two categories: book-style folds and flip phones. The Motorola Razr deserves a quick nod here. The rumored iPhone Fold, though, is said to take a different approach, something closer to a passport shape.

I’ve always liked the idea of a smaller phone and getting rid of that “slab in your pocket” feeling. This form factor sounds like a welcome change. I carry a pocket notebook with me everywhere. Without it, something feels off. A passport-style phone might tap into that same feeling.

The wider shape compared to a traditional phone will take some getting used to. But then again, so will having two screens in one device.

The Price

It wouldn’t be an Apple product, or a post about one, without mentioning price. Nothing is confirmed yet. This is all based on leaks and speculation. Still, current rumors put the price north of $2,000. That’s steep. It also doesn’t do much to stop me from wanting one, or from seriously considering buying it when it launches, hopefully in September.

To Conclude

For the first time, a folding phone feels like a realistic and reasonable option for me. My workflow is evolving, and this feels like the next step. I’m not about to pay for a separate iPad with a cellular plan. This could bridge that gap.

That said, none of this is official. It’s all speculation. Nothing is real until Apple says it is. But when that day comes, there’s a good chance I’ll be in line to buy one. Hopefully in September.

Nick out.
