A few months ago, I wrote about how I finally understood folding phones, and in that post I detailed my growing need and desire for a larger screen. The Plus/Max model iPhones have always been prohibitively big for me, and Apple has never had a folding phone. Correction: had.
Pocket Perfection
Despite my involvement in/around technology, I've always been drawn to pen and paper, specifically pocket notebooks. The form factor has always been very comforting for me to write in, and I've carried one in my back pocket for over three years now. The iPhone Duo's form factor looks exactly like the folding phone I've always had in my head. A high-tech Field Notes/Traveler's Notebook!
Form factor aside, I've been refreshing Twitter and YouTube constantly for new clips and reactions to the device, and I have to say: I echo a lot of what's being said online. I think it looks fantastic.
The Little Things
There are certain things that Apple does that make me smile, and iPhone Duo is chalked full of these smaller details. The obvious one is the open/closing animation that occurs, and it's stunning, but I've been more enamored with the outside screen. The Samsung Galaxy Fold 8 was the first in America to jump on this trend, but something about a more squared-off screen feels right. Maybe it's just me. Or maybe I'll hate it, but right now, I can't stop looking at it!
But...Why?
I totally understand the hestiation and skepticism surrouding folding phones here in the United States, but for me, someone who is constantly working on projects remotely, the iPad mini-like screen being a quick unfold away is a must have. And I know I could just buy an cellular iPad mini, but I'm not doing that, so we're in a bit of a pickle!
I've also made the, somewhat rash, descision to not pursue serious filmmaking with iPhone, at least for now. Maybe in the future that stance will change (as with the Duo, for that matter), but right now, I'm perfectly content with the Duo's lack of Pro camera system. Would I prefer to have it? Duh! What's that saying about beggars?
Lastly, I can't remember the last time I was this geniunely excited for a new iPhone. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing the new internals and software each year, but I'd be lying if I said the current slab-style design wasn't growing a bit thin on me (still the best design of all time, imo). I haven't been able to stop thinking about the device since seeing it unveiled, and I can't wait.
Wake me up in October...
In a show of true creative genius, Green Day's hit 2004 song, Wake Me Up When September Ends has never been more true...for me. Each day is passing by slower and slower, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Deservedly so or not, Apple is my favorite company in the entire world. They've helped me reach levels of creativity that I didn't think were possible, and for that, I'm incredibly grateful. And I know exactly what I'll be doing come October.
Until next time, Nick out.
